Marle subsequently tags along to the demonstration, where Luccas device malfunctions and sends Marle into another realm, in a different time and space. On his way to Luccas showcase, Chrono runs into Marle, a very hyperactive girl who Chrono finds familiar. Chrono, the games protagonist, rushes to the celebration to witness his friend Luccas latest creation, a teleporter of sorts. The games main setting is the Kingdom of Guardia, which is celebrating its millennial with a huge festival. As such, it is good to see that Chrono Triggers story remains largely unchanged. Back when Chrono Trigger was first released on the SNES, it was not as readily available in the West as many other games, so sadly many gamers have never had the chance to try it out.

To tell you the truth, it shapes up pretty darn well. So, just how well does the game shape up after all these years? Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS is a game that not only uses time as a key motif in its narrative, but it is a game that stands up well to the test of time, as one of Square Enixs best non-Final Fantasy RPGs. Sometimes it can alter our perception of games that we loved years ago, and sometimes it simply makes us realise that the games we all knew and loved are actually pretty damn bad. In the short term, however, Square Enix will be betting on Marvel's Avengers and Outriders to keep it afloat meaning we'll have to wait a bit longer before any potential remake announcements.Time is a funny thing. Chrono Trigger, for example, launched around the same time as the original Trials of Mana for SNES and a remake could theoretically run on the same UE4 engine that powers the Trials of Mana remake. With both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Trials of Mana doing so well, it wouldn't be out of the question for Square Enix to open its vault of classic 16-bit or 32-bit games for more potential remakes. The high numbers may not be fueled entirely by nostalgia, however, as the report also mentions increased demand in digital downloads during that same time period due to COVID-19. The latest financial earnings from Square Enix explicitly credits both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Trials of Mana for the YoY rise in both sales and profits in the company's HD Game segment.Īs noted in the report which can be seen below, Trials of Mana sales have been so strong that they "have significantly surpassed" initial expectations. Despite launching in the same month as Final Fantasy 7 Remake with the real risk of being overshadowed, Trials of Mana still managed to sell very well on all platforms.
